Lionel Messi Scores Twice but Real Betis Stun Barcelona 4-3 at Camp Nou
Barcelona suffered their first home defeat in La Liga in more than two years as Real Betis claimed a dramatic 4-3 victory at the Camp Nou.
The defeat ended Barcelona’s 42-match unbeaten home run in the league, stretching back to their loss against Alaves in September 2016.
Lionel Messi returned to the starting line-up after missing five matches through injury and scored twice, but his goals were not enough to prevent Barcelona from falling to defeat.
Real Betis produced an impressive counter-attacking performance and repeatedly exposed Barcelona’s defence to secure one of the biggest results of the La Liga season.
Messi converted from the penalty spot and later added another goal deep into stoppage time, but both efforts ultimately proved insufficient.
The result marked a disappointing return for the Argentine star and brought an end to Barcelona’s long unbeaten league record at home.
