Chelsea vs Everton: Pickford Frustrates Blues in Goalless Draw
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri admitted his side paid the price for a slow start and a lack of cutting edge as Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a series of impressive saves to secure a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea struggled to create clear chances during the opening stages but improved considerably after the break, dominating possession and putting the Everton defence under sustained pressure.
Despite their second-half improvement, the hosts were unable to find a way past Pickford.
The result left Chelsea two points behind Liverpool, who had beaten Fulham earlier in the day, while Manchester City still had the opportunity to extend their advantage.
Sarri criticised his team’s approach in the opening 25 minutes, saying Chelsea moved the ball too slowly and lacked the intensity needed to trouble Everton.
He said the problem might have been mental rather than physical, pointing out that his players were able to increase the tempo significantly after the interval.
Chelsea’s unbeaten start under Sarri stretched to 18 matches in all competitions, while the Italian also became the first new Premier League manager to avoid defeat in his opening 12 league games.
Sarri welcomed the record but admitted he would have preferred three points.
Chelsea’s best chances came after the break, with Eden Hazard becoming increasingly influential.
Alvaro Morata was denied by Pickford after meeting a Hazard cross, while Willian narrowly missed the target after being played through by the Belgian.
Hazard also tested Pickford with a powerful effort, while another shot took a deflection off Yerry Mina and forced the England goalkeeper into another excellent save.
Marcos Alonso had earlier come close with a free-kick before seeing a powerful volley pushed away by Pickford.
The contest also featured several physical exchanges, with Antonio Rudiger and Bernard both booked following a confrontation shortly before half-time.
Jorginho was also shown a yellow card for a strong challenge on Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Everton manager Marco Silva praised his side’s resilience while expressing concern over the challenge on Sigurdsson.
For Chelsea, the draw highlighted the need to turn possession and territorial dominance into more goals as they attempted to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
