Bundesliga: Bayern Munich Slip to Fourth in League Table
Defending champions Bayern Munich dropped to fourth place in the Bundesliga after RB Leipzig moved above them with a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern had already suffered a setback a day earlier, losing 3-2 to league leaders Borussia Dortmund in a dramatic encounter that left them seven points off the top.
Leipzig then took advantage by beating Leverkusen, with Yussuf Poulsen scoring twice and playing a key role in another goal.
Poulsen opened the scoring in the 27th minute, lifting the ball past goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. The goal survived a VAR review over a possible offside involving Timo Werner.
Leverkusen threatened through Kai Havertz before introducing Leon Bailey after the break, but Leipzig remained in control.
Poulsen was involved again in the second goal, flicking on a throw-in before Marcel Sabitzer helped create the chance for Lukas Klostermann to finish in the 68th minute.
Bailey later forced a save from Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi with a curling free-kick, but the visitors were unable to find a way back into the match.
Poulsen then sealed the victory five minutes from time after Leipzig capitalised on a poor pass from Dominik Kohr.
Bayern’s defeat to Dortmund had already increased pressure on head coach Niko Kovac.
Robert Lewandowski scored both of Bayern’s goals, but Marco Reus twice equalised for Dortmund before Paco Alcacer came off the bench to score the winner.
The result left Bayern with just eight points from a possible 21 over their previous seven league matches and dealt another blow to their hopes of winning a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title.
Dortmund remained unbeaten and four points clear of second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, who defeated Werder Bremen 3-1 with Alassane Plea scoring a hat-trick.
