Tinubu Denies Interfering in Kano Election, Expresses Anger Over Allegation
National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has denied reports that he was in Kano State interfering in the rescheduled governorship election.
Tinubu, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said he had not been in Kano at any point during the conduct of the election.
The statement was made available to journalists in Lagos by his Media Adviser, Tunde Rahman.
Tinubu also dismissed a photograph circulating in the media which showed him with Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, explaining that the picture was taken in 2018 when the governor visited Lagos.
He described the allegations as false and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic process, arguing that political actors should not rely on misinformation to influence public opinion.
According to Tinubu, some politicians were attempting to portray him as someone seeking to interfere with the Kano governorship election in order to gain political advantage.
“For the record, I am not in Kano and I have not been in Kano at any point during the conduct of these elections,” he said.
He added that the photograph being circulated as evidence of his presence in Kano was an old image taken during Ganduje’s visit to Lagos.
Tinubu praised the political awareness of the people of Kano, describing the state as having a long history of progressive politics.
He expressed confidence that voters in the state were capable of making their own decisions without outside interference.
According to him, the people of Kano should ignore what he described as false reports and vote according to their political convictions.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his support for the APC and urged voters to consider the party and its candidates based on their programmes and records.
He maintained that he had spent many years advocating electoral reforms, justice and equality and would not support any action capable of undermining the credibility of the electoral system.
“I believe in a free and fair electoral process, a project to which I have devoted a significant part of my adult life,” Tinubu said.
He added that the Kano election should be decided on the merits of the candidates and the choices of the electorate.
Tinubu described himself as a committed democrat and said he would neither support nor promote any action that could weaken or undermine Nigeria’s electoral process.
