Alexis Sanchez was on target as Manchester United defeated AC Milan on penalties in their International Champions Cup friendly after the match finished 1-1.

Sanchez gave United the lead in the 12th minute with a composed finish, but AC Milan responded just three minutes later through Spanish midfielder Suso.

The Chilean international was one of United’s standout performers in the encounter, but Jose Mourinho’s side were unable to find a second goal in regulation time.

With the scores level, the match went to a penalty shoot-out.

Manchester United eventually won the shoot-out 9-8 after both teams were forced to reuse penalty takers following a series of missed spot-kicks.

Ander Herrera converted his second penalty in sudden death to put United ahead before AC Milan youngster Franck Kessie sent his effort over the bar, handing victory to the Premier League side.

Goalkeeper Joel Pereira, who featured in the absence of David De Gea and Sergio Romero, said he hoped his performance would strengthen his chances of remaining in Mourinho’s plans.

Pereira said the manager had shown confidence in him and added that he was determined to justify that faith as he waited to learn where he would play during the coming season.
