Newcastle Agree Deal to Sign Japan Forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz
Newcastle United have agreed terms to sign Japan international Yoshinori Muto from German club Mainz, with the transfer subject to the forward receiving the necessary work permit.
The 26-year-old travelled to Tyneside for a medical after an agreement was reached between Newcastle and Mainz.
The Premier League club said Muto had also agreed personal terms, leaving only the governing body endorsement to be resolved before the transfer could be completed.
Because Muto had not been a regular starter for Japan in recent international matches, his eligibility to play in England required further consideration.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Japan international Yoshinori Muto has been on Tyneside ahead of a proposed move to the club,” Newcastle said in a statement.
The club added that an agreement had been formalised with Mainz and that Muto had successfully undergone a medical.
Newcastle said the transfer would be completed once the player received the required approval from the relevant football authorities.
The move would give Muto the opportunity to continue his career in the Premier League after his spell in the Bundesliga with Mainz.
