The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike as chairman of its national campaign council for the Edo State governorship election.
The party also named Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as deputy chairman of the campaign council.
The appointments were announced through the PDP’s official social media account as the party intensified preparations for the September 19, 2020 governorship election.
Governor Godwin Obaseki, who recently joined the PDP after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), was expected to contest the election against APC candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Wike’s appointment placed him at the centre of the PDP’s national campaign effort in Edo, with responsibility for coordinating party leaders and mobilising support for Obaseki.
In a separate development, the PDP screening committee for the Ondo State governorship election cleared seven of the nine aspirants who appeared before it, while two were disqualified.
The committee was chaired by former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara, who said the panel carefully reviewed the claims and documents submitted by each aspirant.
Dogara said the screening process was intended to ensure that candidates who progressed to the primary met the party’s requirements and would be less likely to face successful challenges afterward.
He declined to publicly identify the two disqualified aspirants, noting that anyone dissatisfied with the decision could appeal.
However, party sources indicated that Bamidele Akingboye was among those disqualified over alleged discrepancies between his name and the details contained in certificates presented to the committee.
Those screened ahead of the July 22 PDP governorship primary included Eyitayo Jegede, Boluwaji Kunlere, Ondo State Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, Eddy Olafeso, Banji Okunomo, Bode Ayorinde, Bamidele Akingboye, Godday Erewa and Sola Ebiseni.
The developments came as the PDP prepared simultaneously for major governorship contests in Edo and Ondo states.
