Breaking: INEC Holds Meeting With Nigeria’s Former Heads of State
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has held a meeting with some of Nigeria’s former Heads of State following the postponement of the 2019 general elections.
The meeting took place in Abuja as the electoral commission moved to address concerns arising from its decision to shift the dates of the elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and other National Commissioners were reportedly engaged in discussions with the former national leaders ahead of a scheduled stakeholders’ meeting at the National Collation Centre.
The commission had earlier fixed the stakeholders’ meeting for 2 p.m., but proceedings were delayed because senior INEC officials were still meeting with the former Heads of State.
INEC Director of Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Liaison, Oluwole Osaze-Uzi, informed stakeholders that the Chairman and National Commissioners would join the meeting after concluding their discussions.
“The Chairman and National Commissioners would have been here, but they are currently meeting with former Heads of State. They will soon be here,” Osaze-Uzi said.
The meeting followed widespread reactions to INEC’s decision to postpone the 2019 general elections, which had generated concern among political parties, candidates, voters and other stakeholders across the country.
INEC was expected to use its engagement with stakeholders to explain the reasons for the postponement and provide further information on preparations for the rescheduled elections.
