The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, moved closer to victory after winning 11 of the state’s 27 local government areas in results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The results were announced in Owerri on Monday by the state Returning Officer, Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Otonta.

Ihedioha emerged with victories in 11 local government areas and also recorded substantial margins in several of the areas won by the PDP.

His closest rival, Uche Nwosu of the Action Alliance (AA), won 10 local government areas. Nwosu, who was supported by outgoing Governor Rochas Okorocha and was also his son-in-law, recorded most of his victories in Imo West Senatorial District.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ifeanyi Araraume, won four local government areas, while Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured victories in two.

The Accord Party candidate did not win any of the 27 local government areas.

The results also showed clear regional patterns, with the leading candidates demonstrating strength in their respective political strongholds.

Ihedioha dominated Imo East Senatorial District, winning all the local government areas in the zone. He also secured victories in parts of Imo North and Imo West, strengthening his overall position in the contest.

Among his strongest performances was Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, where the PDP recorded 64,219 votes, compared with 4,296 for the AA, 3,478 for the APC and 2,520 for APGA.

In Ahiazu Mbaise, the PDP polled 32,987 votes, while the AA received 3,395, APGA 2,405 and the APC 971.

Ihedioha also won Ikeduru with 14,848 votes, Owerri West with 12,878, Mbaitoli with 13,358, Owerri North with 12,797 and Ngor Okpala with 11,502 votes.

The PDP candidate further won Owerri Municipal with 10,118 votes and recorded strong support across the rest of Imo East.

Nwosu, however, dominated much of Imo West. The AA won areas including Njaba, Isu, Orlu, Nwangele, Nkwerre, Ohaji/Egbema and Ideato South.

One of Nwosu’s strongest performances came in Ideato South, where the AA recorded more than 40,000 votes.

He also secured 16,339 votes in Ohaji/Egbema, 9,924 in Nwangele and 9,659 in Orlu.

In Oru East, however, the APC recorded a major victory, with Hope Uzodinma polling 24,257 votes, far ahead of the other candidates.

The APC also performed strongly in some parts of Imo West, although its overall number of local government victories remained limited.

APGA’s strongest showing came from Imo North Senatorial District, where Araraume secured several victories.

In Isiala Mbano, APGA polled 17,817 votes, while the AA recorded 3,383, the PDP 3,589 and the APC 1,893.

APGA also performed strongly in Ehime Mbano, recording 12,410 votes, ahead of the AA with 5,477 and the PDP with 5,238.

In Okigwe, however, the AA narrowly defeated APGA, polling 8,469 votes against APGA’s 8,365.

The pattern of results showed that the governorship contest was largely divided along senatorial and local political lines, with Ihedioha dominating Imo East, Nwosu controlling much of Imo West and Araraume showing considerable strength in Imo North.

With results from all 27 local government areas announced, Ihedioha’s broad victories and substantial vote margins placed the PDP candidate in a strong position as INEC moved toward concluding the collation of the Imo State governorship election.
