Atiku Warns Edo Political Crisis Poses Threat to Constitutional Order
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has warned that the unfolding political crisis in Edo State poses a threat to constitutional order and could undermine the forthcoming governorship election.
Atiku, in a statement posted on his verified social media account, urged political actors behind the crisis to restrain their supporters and respect the rule of law.
He said Nigeria was already facing significant political tension and warned against actions capable of worsening the situation.
“What is happening in Edo is a threat to constitutional order nationwide,” Atiku said.
He called on what he described as “belligerent forces” to rein in their proxies and allow lawful institutions to function without interference.
According to him, respect for the rule of law remained essential to maintaining peace and political stability.
“Atiku said without the rule of law, there will be no rule at all,” he stated.
The former vice-president also expressed concern that the political developments in Edo could affect law and order in the state and create uncertainty ahead of the September 19 governorship election.
He stressed that the people of Edo should be allowed to freely determine who would govern them through the ballot box.
“The people of Edo should be allowed to choose who they wish to govern them, and that choice is to be made on September 19,” Atiku said.
He therefore urged all parties to avoid actions that could alter the political situation unlawfully before the election.
Atiku maintained that everything legally permissible should be done to preserve stability in the state until voters had the opportunity to make their choice at the polls.
