Super Eagles defender Tyronne Ebuehi has said he has no regrets choosing to represent Nigeria instead of the Netherlands, where he was born.

Ebuehi was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia but saw limited playing time during the tournament.

He featured as a substitute in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Iceland and was also introduced late in the 2-1 defeat to Argentina, a result that ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

Despite his limited opportunities, the defender said he remained satisfied with his decision to play international football for Nigeria.

“There are absolutely no regrets. It was a big choice and one I can happily live with,” Ebuehi said.

He explained that his father is Nigerian and from Benin City, while his mother is Dutch, giving him the option to identify with both countries.

Ebuehi said Nigeria’s strong football tradition also influenced his decision.

“Nigeria is one of the biggest football countries in Africa. I think it was a great opportunity for me to play for Nigeria,” he said.

He added that choosing the Super Eagles was one of the best decisions of his football career.

Ebuehi also revealed that fellow Dutch-born Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong played an important role in helping him make the decision.

According to him, Troost-Ekong, who was also born in Haarlem and had previously represented the Netherlands at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria, offered useful advice about playing for the Super Eagles.

Ebuehi said that guidance helped strengthen his conviction that representing Nigeria was the right choice for his international career.
