Breaking: PDP Primary — All Clear for Obaseki as Imasuagbon Steps Down
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki is set to emerge as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate following the withdrawal of his remaining rival, Kenneth Imasuagbon, just hours before the party’s primary election.
A total of 2,229 PDP delegates had gathered at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City for the exercise.
Imasuagbon’s decision to step down effectively cleared the path for Obaseki, who had only recently joined the PDP after leaving the All Progressives Congress.
Two other aspirants, Gideon Ikhine and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, had earlier withdrawn from the contest and declared support for Obaseki.
Despite the withdrawals, the primary was expected to proceed through an affirmation vote by delegates.
With no remaining challenger, Obaseki was positioned to secure the PDP ticket and represent the party in the September 19, 2020 Edo State governorship election.
