Solskjaer Realistic About Transfers but Keen to Keep Pogba at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted the club will need to be realistic in the transfer market because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, while stressing his desire to keep Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had already warned that the club would not conduct business as usual during the summer transfer window, with football facing significant financial uncertainty.
Solskjaer said the changing economic situation meant transfer fees and player valuations would have to be considered carefully.
“There’s got to be realism,” Solskjaer said. “I think the whole world has changed, both financially and the perception that we’ve got on values.”
He added that any transfer requests he presented to Woodward would be made with the club’s long-term interests in mind.
“I’ll always think long term and try to be making good deals,” he said.
United’s strong form following the restart also reduced some of the pressure to make expensive additions, with youngster Mason Greenwood impressing after scoring three goals in two matches.
His performances helped ease speculation surrounding a possible move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Pogba’s return from injury was another major boost for United, with the French midfielder playing an important role in the team’s improved performances.
Before the coronavirus shutdown, Pogba had been widely linked with a move away from Old Trafford, particularly to Real Madrid.
However, his developing midfield partnership with Bruno Fernandes gave Solskjaer further reason to hope the World Cup winner would remain at the club.
Pogba’s contract was due to expire the following summer, although United held an option to extend it by another year.
After Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic signed new deals, Solskjaer said he hoped Pogba would also commit his future to United.
“Of course we want to keep the best players around the club,” he said. “We want to build a squad for the future.”
The United manager added that Pogba appeared to be enjoying his football following his return to action.
“Since Paul’s come back now he’s looking better and better,” Solskjaer said. “He’s just enjoying his football and let’s see where it takes us.”
