Neville Predicts Chelsea Will Sack Sarri Before Start of Next Season
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has predicted that Chelsea could part company with manager Maurizio Sarri before the start of next season.
Sarri has faced growing pressure following a difficult run of results and reports of unrest within the Chelsea dressing room.
The Blues returned to winning ways with a convincing 5-0 victory over Huddersfield Town after suffering damaging defeats to Arsenal and Bournemouth.
Sarri had publicly criticised his players following the loss to Arsenal, saying they were difficult to motivate, while also insisting he would not abandon his tactical approach.
Neville believes Chelsea’s history of frequently changing managers could eventually work against the Italian.
“I don’t think Chelsea will sack him during the season, but the warning signs are there which make you think it would be surprising if it went past the summer,” Neville said.
He added that his prediction was not based on Sarri doing a poor job, but rather on the pressures and internal politics traditionally associated with the managerial position at Stamford Bridge.
According to Neville, Chelsea managers have often struggled to maintain long-term control, regardless of their previous success.
Sarri’s side were fourth in the Premier League and facing increasing pressure from Manchester United in the battle for Champions League qualification.
A failure to finish in the top four could increase scrutiny on the manager, especially given Chelsea’s history of dismissing successful coaches after disappointing league campaigns.
Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho were both sacked in seasons following Premier League title victories, while Carlo Ancelotti was dismissed despite finishing second in the league during his final campaign.
Sarri has also faced criticism over his style of play and team selection, particularly his decision to use N’Golo Kante in a more advanced midfield position rather than in the defensive role where he had previously excelled.
With Chelsea still competing for domestic and European honours, Sarri’s future could ultimately depend on results during the remainder of the season.
