Naira Marley Hints at Plans to Support Prisoners
Nigerian singer Naira Marley has expressed concern over the plight of inmates who have spent long periods in detention without trial, saying he hopes to help some of them seek justice.
The musician shared his thoughts on Instagram after his own experience in custody following his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged cybercrime-related offences.
Marley was later granted bail of N2 million with two sureties in like sum and subsequently released from custody.
Reflecting on his time in detention, the singer said he encountered inmates whose circumstances left a strong impression on him.
“I have to help a lot of people in jail,” Marley wrote.
He claimed that one inmate told him he had spent nine years in custody without appearing before a court or being convicted.
“What if he is not even guilty?” the singer questioned.
Marley also alleged that he met another detainee who had spent more than two years in custody over a dispute connected to his relationship with the daughter of a wealthy woman.
The experiences, according to the singer, made him more aware of the difficulties faced by people held for extended periods without their cases being concluded.
He consequently hinted that he could use his influence and resources to assist some inmates in obtaining legal help and pursuing justice.
Marley also made light-hearted comments about his own imprisonment during a social media broadcast, joking that supporters popularly associated with internet fraud owed him for what he described as his sacrifice.
The singer’s comments came shortly after his release on bail as his own case continued before the court.
