George Foreman Says Deontay Wilder Can Beat Tyson Fury Easily
Former two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman believes Deontay Wilder can defeat Tyson Fury if he makes the right adjustments ahead of their proposed third fight.
Wilder suffered the first defeat of his professional career when Fury stopped him in the seventh round of their February rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The American was knocked down twice before his corner threw in the towel, ending his reign as WBC heavyweight champion.
Their first meeting in December 2018 had ended in a controversial split draw after Fury recovered from two knockdowns, including a heavy fall in the 12th round.
Foreman said he reached out to Wilder after the defeat because he could relate to the experience of losing a world heavyweight title unexpectedly.
The former champion recalled his own defeat to Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974, when he lost his title and suffered the first defeat of his career.
“I had a nice conversation with Wilder,” Foreman said. “Only I know what he’s going through.”
Foreman added that he tried to offer Wilder advice on how to respond mentally and professionally to such a setback.
“He’s going to have to live with the Fury loss, but I can show him how to live with that and come back better,” he said.
Wilder exercised his contractual right to an immediate rematch, setting the stage for a third fight between the heavyweight rivals.
The trilogy bout had initially been planned for July but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, with a later date being considered.
Foreman remains confident that Wilder is capable of reclaiming his title.
“Not only beat him, he can do it easily,” Foreman said. “Give him another chance. He’ll show you.”
