Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga after securing a comfortable 4-1 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday.

French winger Kingsley Coman scored twice as the defending champions moved one point clear of Borussia Dortmund with five matches remaining in the title race.

Bayern climbed to 67 points, while Dortmund remained second on 66 following their 2-1 victory over Mainz. RB Leipzig occupied third place with 58 points.

Bayern started strongly and took the lead in the 15th minute when Coman’s cross travelled through the penalty area and went beyond goalkeeper Michael Rensing.

Robert Lewandowski came close to doubling the advantage eight minutes later, but his free-kick from the edge of the box narrowly missed the target.

Despite dominating possession, Bayern occasionally struggled to break down a determined Düsseldorf defence.

Coman eventually scored his second goal four minutes before half-time, finishing from Joshua Kimmich’s cutback.

Bayern continued to control the match after the break, and Serge Gnabry made it 3-0 in the 55th minute with a close-range finish.

The visitors created several more chances, but former Bayern goalkeeper Rensing produced a number of saves to prevent an even heavier defeat.

Düsseldorf pulled one back late in the game when Dodi Lukebakio converted a penalty following a handball by Mats Hummels.

However, Leon Goretzka restored Bayern’s three-goal advantage in stoppage time to complete the 4-1 victory.

The result strengthened Bayern’s bid to win a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title and ensured they remained narrowly ahead of Dortmund heading into the final five matches of the season.
