AFCON 2019: Soccer Fans Urge Super Eagles Technical Crew to Improve Defence and Attack
Nigerian football fans have urged the Super Eagles technical crew to strengthen the team’s defence and improve its attacking play as the Africa Cup of Nations continues in Egypt.
The calls followed Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Burundi in their opening Group B match at the Alexandria Stadium.
The fans praised the team for starting the tournament with a win but said stronger performances would be needed against tougher opponents.
Suleiman Isah, President of the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation, said the Super Eagles needed to become more solid defensively and more clinical in front of goal.
“I am happy that we won our first match, but our players and coaches led by Gernot Rohr must work hard to fortify our defence and sharpen our attack,” Isah said.
He noted that Nigeria struggled for long periods to break down Burundi and warned that the team could face stronger opposition later in the competition.
Isah also praised Rohr’s substitutions during the match, saying the introduction of Ahmed Musa helped improve Nigeria’s attacking threat.
Another football enthusiast, Aliyu Lawal, said the players needed greater concentration and commitment if they hoped to win the tournament.
He pointed out that Nigeria had taken an early advantage in Group B after beating Burundi, while Madagascar and Guinea played out a 2-2 draw.
Lawal, however, expressed concern about goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi’s performance and called for changes ahead of the match against Guinea.
He also urged the team to improve its coordination and make better use of the chances created.
“Our strikers need to be much more aggressive in their pursuit of goals,” he said, adding that Nigeria wasted several opportunities against Burundi.
Daniel Atori also praised the opening victory but said the technical crew still had significant work to do, particularly in defence and attack.
He urged the players to remain disciplined and focused while improving their ability to convert scoring opportunities.
Atori added that victory against Guinea would put Nigeria in a strong position and could allow Rohr to give other members of the squad playing time in the final group match against Madagascar.
