Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers opened their Premier League campaigns with a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams struggled to create clear chances in a match that offered little evidence they were ready to challenge the Premier League’s established top six.

Wolves thought they had taken the lead early in the second half when Leander Dendoncker found the net.

However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review after the ball was judged to have struck Willy Boly’s hand before Dendoncker scored.

The decision denied Wolves what would have been the decisive goal of the match.

Leicester dominated possession for long periods, controlling more than 70 per cent of the ball, but struggled to turn that advantage into meaningful opportunities.

The hosts had to wait until seven minutes from time to seriously test Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, who comfortably saved an effort from Harvey Barnes.

Leicester and Wolves, along with Everton, had been viewed as possible challengers for European places if clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea or Arsenal struggled during the season.

However, their opening encounter ended with both sides sharing the points after a largely uneventful performance.
