Buhari Suspends CJN Walter Onnoghen, Appoints Tanko Mohammed as Acting CJN
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday suspended the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, pending the conclusion of his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Buhari announced the suspension at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to the President, the decision followed an order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal directing him to suspend Onnoghen while the case against him was being determined.
Following the suspension, President Buhari swore in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Justice Mohammed, who hails from Bauchi State, was at the time the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court after Onnoghen.
