The classic Nollywood film Rattlesnake, originally created by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe, is returning to the screen in a modern remake produced by Play Network Studios.

The original film, released in 1995, followed the story of Ahanna, a young man who turned to armed robbery after the death of his father and growing family difficulties.

In the new version, Stan Nze takes on the role of Ahanna, who becomes dissatisfied with the direction of his life and decides to pursue wealth through crime.

He assembles a group of highly skilled thieves known as the Armadas, and together they carry out a series of elaborate robberies that initially bring them the lifestyle they desire.

Their success, however, soon attracts dangerous enemies from both sides of the law, leaving Ahanna struggling to escape the consequences of the criminal life he created.

The remake is executive produced by Charles Okpaleke and directed by Ramsey Nouah.

Its cast includes Osas Ighodaro, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Elma Mbadiwe, Chiwetalu Agu, AY Makun, Fred Amata, Bucci Franklin, Efa Iwara, Ejike Asiegbu, Chinyere Wilfred and Tobi Bakre.

Gloria and Norbert Young also feature, alongside their daughter Antoria Uri Young, who makes her acting debut.

Producer Chris Odeh said the idea to remake Rattlesnake emerged while the team was working on another Nollywood classic, Living in Bondage.

According to Odeh, the film’s coming-of-age story remained relevant to a new generation while also providing an opportunity to celebrate Nigerian culture and honour Amaka Igwe’s contribution to Nollywood.

He said Igwe played an important role in developing many of the stars who later became leading figures in the Nigerian film industry.

Line producer Judith Audu described the remake as a combination of drama, family values, friendship and love, promising audiences an emotional and entertaining experience.

Screenwriter Nicole Asinugo also credited Amaka Igwe’s original work, explaining that the new screenplay retained the central spirit of the original while introducing contemporary experiences and expanding some of its characters.

Production was completed despite challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the cast and crew operating under strict health and safety measures.

Rattlesnake is scheduled to premiere on November 8, 2020, before arriving in cinemas on November 13.
