The Nigeria Football Federation is awaiting a decision from the Confederation of African Football on whether the country will be granted hosting rights for the 2020 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea were being considered as potential hosts after Congo Brazzaville withdrew, while South Africa, which had been placed on standby, also declined the opportunity.

The NFF entered the race after an earlier bid to host the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup failed to materialise.

A senior NFF official said the federation expected CAF to announce its decision in April and expressed confidence in Nigeria’s bid.

“We would find out in April if we are hosting or not. Nigeria has submitted a good bid and we are hopeful of getting the nod to host,” the official said.

If successful, Nigeria would host the continental women’s tournament for the fourth time, having previously staged the competition in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Asaba, Benin, Uyo and Lagos were among the cities being considered as possible venues.

The Super Falcons were the defending champions after winning their ninth continental title at the 2018 tournament in Ghana.

Nigeria would be aiming for a record-extending 10th title, particularly after missing out on qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, the NFF was also expected to appoint a new coach for the Super Falcons once the federation resolved the financial issues surrounding the process.
