Breaking: Chelsea Beat Arsenal 2-1 in London Derby
Chelsea staged a dramatic late comeback to defeat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, ruining Mikel Arteta’s first home match as Gunners manager.
Arsenal appeared on course for victory after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave them an early lead, but a costly mistake from goalkeeper Bernd Leno allowed Jorginho to equalise before Tammy Abraham struck the winner three minutes from time.
The Gunners made a bright start and went ahead in the 13th minute from a well-worked corner. Calum Chambers headed Mesut Ozil’s delivery into the path of Aubameyang, who escaped his marker and nodded past Kepa Arrizabalaga for his 15th goal of the season.
Chelsea struggled during the opening period, prompting manager Frank Lampard to make an early tactical change. Emerson was withdrawn after 33 minutes and replaced by Jorginho as Lampard moved away from his initial 3-4-3 formation.
The switch helped Chelsea gain greater control, although Arsenal maintained their advantage until the closing stages.
Chelsea increased the pressure after the break, with young defender Tariq Lamptey making his senior debut and providing additional attacking energy.
The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Leno misjudged Mason Mount’s high free-kick. The Arsenal goalkeeper failed to collect the ball, leaving Jorginho with a simple finish into an empty net.
Arsenal were unable to recover from the setback and Chelsea completed the turnaround four minutes later.
Willian broke into the penalty area before finding Abraham, who turned away from Shkodran Mustafi and calmly fired the ball underneath Leno to secure all three points.
The defeat extended Arsenal’s difficult run to just one victory in 15 matches in all competitions. They also suffered a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions for the first time in 60 years.
Chelsea, meanwhile, strengthened their position in fourth place after recovering from a poor spell in which they had lost five of their previous seven Premier League matches.
The victory also gave Lampard’s side a second successive away win following their recent triumph over Tottenham, leaving them four points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.
