Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham Hopes Injury Is ‘Not Too Serious’
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is hopeful that the hip injury he suffered during the club’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Valencia will not keep him out for long.
The 22-year-old was injured shortly before half-time after falling awkwardly while challenging for the ball from a corner inside the Valencia penalty area.
Abraham received treatment on the pitch and initially tried to walk off with the help of Chelsea’s medical staff, but later went down again and had to be carried away on a stretcher.
The striker admitted he initially feared the injury could be serious but said he felt better after the match.
“It’s much better than when it happened,” Abraham said.
“At the time I was fearful of the worst, but it was much better when I got in.”
He added that he was able to walk and move around afterwards and hoped scans would reveal only bruising.
“It was a knee to my hip area, so hopefully it’s not too serious,” he said.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard also suggested the early assessment was more encouraging than initially feared.
Lampard said the injury had first appeared severe but later information indicated it might not be as serious.
Despite the setback, Abraham was already looking ahead to Chelsea’s final Champions League group match against Lille.
Chelsea can secure a place in the knockout stage by beating the French side at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s always been a dream to play in the Champions League, so I don’t want it to end here,” Abraham said.
“It’s good that it’s in our hands.”
Abraham has been one of Chelsea’s key players this season, scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances.
