AFCON 2019: Bamigboye Urges Rohr to Select Nigeria’s Best Players
FCT Football Association board member Godwin Bamigboye has urged Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to select Nigeria’s best players for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Bamigboye said Nigeria would need competent and talented players to compete successfully at the tournament and called on Rohr to base his selections strictly on merit.
He argued that players should not be selected simply because they play for clubs in Europe, insisting that Nigerian-based players who are in good form should also be given consideration.
According to him, some Nigerian players based in Europe are not regular starters for their clubs, which could affect their fitness and performances at the tournament.
“Many of our players in Europe are average players in their various clubs, unlike some of the Nigerian-based players,” Bamigboye said.
He added that modern football should be focused on performances and results rather than the reputation of a player or the size of the club he represents.
Bamigboye said the Super Eagles needed a strong showing at the tournament to restore confidence among Nigerian football supporters.
He nevertheless expressed optimism about the quality of the national team and urged Nigerians to support the players ahead of the competition.
Nigeria will begin their Group B campaign against Burundi on June 22 as the Super Eagles seek another African title.
