Sarri Urges Chelsea to Finish Season on a High Note
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has challenged his players to finish the season strongly as the club battles to secure Champions League qualification and reach the Europa League final.
Chelsea travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday, with Sarri’s side still fighting on two fronts.
The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League with two matches remaining and are two points ahead of Arsenal and three clear of Manchester United.
Chelsea are due to face Watford and Leicester City in their final league fixtures, while success in the Europa League would provide another route into next season’s Champions League.
Sarri believes achieving both objectives would represent a successful season despite the difficulties Chelsea have experienced.
“We are fighting for the top four and in the semi-final of the Europa League. We have done a good season,” Sarri said.
“Now we need to take two very important targets.”
Chelsea’s preparations have been complicated by the loss of defender Antonio Rudiger, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
The German international suffered the injury during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United and was expected to undergo surgery.
Sarri has endured a difficult first season in English football despite beginning the campaign with an 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
A series of poor results during the middle of the season increased pressure on the Italian, while his tactical decisions also attracted criticism from supporters.
His use of Jorginho as the central defensive midfielder, with N’Golo Kante operating in a more advanced position, became one of the major talking points surrounding Chelsea’s performances.
Sarri also experimented with Eden Hazard as a central striker before Chelsea brought Gonzalo Higuain to Stamford Bridge on loan from Juventus.
The Argentine struggled to make the expected impact after replacing Alvaro Morata, who joined Atletico Madrid on loan.
Sarri’s relationship with supporters became increasingly strained during the season, with some fans openly calling for his dismissal following disappointing results.
Another controversial moment came in the League Cup final against Manchester City when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga appeared to refuse Sarri’s attempt to substitute him shortly before the penalty shootout.
Despite those difficulties, Chelsea remain in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League and have an opportunity to end the campaign with European silverware.
Kepa said the team understood the importance of maintaining concentration during the final weeks of the season.
“We have to be prepared, stay attentive, maintain our focus and train hard,” he said.
“We can’t let this precious opportunity that we have escape us.”
