Balogun Admits Frustration Over Limited Playing Time at Brighton
Nigeria defender Leon Balogun has admitted his frustration over his limited playing opportunities at Brighton and Hove Albion but says he remains determined to fight for a regular place in the team.
The former Mainz defender has made only a handful of starts since joining the Premier League club from Germany, featuring in seven matches.
Balogun, who recently returned from international duty with the Super Eagles, said he hopes to earn more playing time ahead of Nigeria’s participation at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
“It’s been difficult, but that’s the manager’s call. I’ve just got to get on with it and hope for a chance,” Balogun said.
The defender added that he is eager to play an important role for Nigeria at his first Africa Cup of Nations but believes regular club football would strengthen his chances.
“I really hope to play a significant role in my first Nations Cup for Nigeria, but firstly I want to keep working hard to make a strong case for regular games at Brighton,” he said.
Balogun has made only four appearances for Brighton since December 2018, with injuries and fitness problems also limiting his involvement.
He admitted that being left out of the team has been frustrating but said he would continue preparing himself for any opportunity.
“It’s very frustrating not to be involved, but you can only keep your head up by focusing on helping the club when called upon,” he said.
“If I am needed anytime to start a game or come in, I’ll be ready for that. It’s all I can do.”
The 30-year-old was not included in Brighton’s matchday squad as the club suffered a 1-0 Premier League defeat to Southampton.
