Chelsea defeated Inter Milan 5-4 on penalties after their International Champions Cup encounter ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Goalkeeper Willy Caballero proved decisive in the shootout, saving Milan Skriniar’s penalty before Cesar Azpilicueta converted the winning spot-kick.

Chelsea had taken an early lead through Pedro, who scored in the eighth minute after Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic parried an effort from Alvaro Morata.

The goal was Pedro’s second in as many pre-season matches after he had also scored the winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Perth Glory.

Inter responded early in the second half through Roberto Gagliardini, whose powerful effort beat Caballero after Chelsea lost possession in midfield.

New signing Jorginho came close to restoring Chelsea’s advantage, but his curling attempt was pushed away by Handanovic.

Tammy Abraham also had an opportunity to score but was unable to direct an Emerson cross on target.

Inter nearly grabbed a late winner through Lautaro Martinez, but Caballero produced an important save to keep the scores level.

The match eventually went to penalties, where Caballero denied Skriniar with his legs before Azpilicueta sealed the victory for Chelsea.

Chelsea were scheduled to continue their pre-season preparations against Arsenal in Dublin before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield and Lyon in another friendly.
